Meet Vasanthi Lara, Kerala’s ‘Covid Hero’

Vasanthi Lara, the 53 year old heath worker is the real hero of Kerala even during Covid’s peak. She is the only health worker from Kerala selected by the National Commission for Women as a Covid frontline warrior. Vasanthi is the winner of the ‘Covid Women Warriors, The Real Hero’ award.

Vasanthi Lara, wife of Shebir Khan, of Sara Villa in Mullaikkal Ward in Alappuzha is the Lady Health Inspector of Alappuzha General Hospital. She received the award from Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar at a function at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi recently. Lara’s name was suggested by Alappuzha DMO Dr L Anitha Kumari. Despite the names of doctors from other districts, they have not been able to match Vasanthi’s service. Vasanthi was initially in charge of Covid patients in Alappuzha municipality. She later became a companion of Covid patients throughout the district.

After completing the Health Inspector course at Varkala Mission Hospital, she first joined the Primary Health Center at Omanur, Malappuram in 1989 through employment. She was later appointed as Health Inspector in 1991 through PSC. She also received the state government’s Best Lady Health Inspector Award on Nursing Day 2018 in recognition of her outstanding work during the floods.

His son Dr. Ismail Shebir is a dentist in Ambalappuzha. Daughter Sarah Lara Khan is a final year MBBS student in Europe.

Despite the award, Vasanthi is left with a sadness. Despite such overwhelming recognition, no one even acknowledged it over the phone from the state government or the health sector. She conveyed her regards to the colleagues of Alappuzha General Hospital.

Vasanthi also thanked DMO Dr L Anithakumari, Hospital Superintendent Dr Jamuna Varghese and colleagues for the recognition she received and her family for the support.
